Svetlana

Donated to Lin Coleman for Sisu Oasis from Judy Mayfield, ceramic artist.

Svetlana has an interesting history. In the middle of her creation, I have been diagnosed with HER2-positive invasive carcinoma in my right breast. So, down the “rabbit hole” with biopsies, doctor appointments, offers of drugs, radiation and, of course, surgery.

Meantime, Svetlana went into her first bisque firing, perfect, smooth and lovely. In that firing, her right breast fell off and landed on the shelf. I took her and the right breast and gave her a talking to.

When my piece came out of the final firing, her breast was intact, but it has a crease around it, not unlike the scar that I still have.

I asked her what her name was, and she said “Svetlana.”

I had never heard that name before, so I googled it. It is a Slavic name meaning “light shining luminescent, pure and blessed.” And yes, I do talk to my clay, maybe I am a clay whisperer. Ha ha!

Blessing to all,

Judy
